More about our services
What language is the service in?
The Divine Liturgy is served in Ge'ez, the ancient liturgical language, with Amharic alongside it. You do not need to understand either to be present and welcome.
How long does it last?
The Divine Liturgy is long by the standards of most Western services. You are not expected to stay for the whole of it on a first visit — come and go quietly as you need. Ask one of the clergy for our usual timings.
What should I wear?
Shoes are removed before entering the church, and silence is kept inside. Modest dress is the custom, and covering the head with a netela is usual for women. The right hand side of the church is for women, who enter by the south door; men enter by the north.
May I receive communion?
Communion is for prepared members of the Church who have kept the fast and been to confession. Everyone is welcome to be present, to pray, and to receive the blessed bread afterwards.
When should I arrive?
Come a little before the time listed and someone will help you find your way. Standing at the back is completely normal and nobody will mind.
Are children welcome?
Yes. Children are part of the congregation and no one is troubled by the noise they make.
