The Church we belong to, and the faith it keeps
Who We Are
We are a parish of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, a member of the Oriental Orthodox family of Churches. The Church inherits the historic Christian faith as it has been handed down through the centuries: a faith derived from apostolic heritage, witnessed in Scripture, expounded by the fathers in the ancient councils, and continuing as a living reality in the life of worship, preaching and discipline.
The Faith We Keep
Christianity came to Ethiopia in the fourth century, when Frumentius — called Abba Selama, the Revealer of Light — was consecrated by Athanasius of Alexandria and the faith became that of the Aksumite kingdom under King Ezana. Ethiopia stood by Athanasius and the Nicene Faith, and has held it since. The Church confesses one incarnate nature of God the Word, and does not accept the formula of two natures.
More Than a Religious Institution
As the Church puts it, Christianity in Ethiopia does not constitute a purely religious phenomenon but plays an integral role in all aspects of national life: the Church is not only a religious institution, but has for many centuries been the repository of the cultural, political and social life of the people. In Pretoria that inheritance is carried by families far from home — keeping the fasts together, teaching the children the language and the faith, and marking the feasts as they have been marked for sixteen centuries.
